The Bayfield County Highway Committee will hold a public hearing regarding the possibility of opening all Bayfield County highways to ATVs.

The meeting will be held in the Bayfield County Board Room at the Courthouse in Washburn, 117 E Fifth Street.  Public input will be received at the meeting, via email and virtually via TEAMS.  Presenters are encouraged to submit presentations digitally for inclusion in the record.

Bayfield County’s current ordinance, Title 10, Chapter 3 addresses All-Terrain Vehicles.  Current ordinance allows for sections of county highways to be opened on a case-by-case basis.  Today, 42 sections amounting to 77.75 miles or 45% of all CTH’s are designated as ATV routes.  Historically, many of these connect ATV trails with nearby establishments for ease of access.  The Highway Committee, Highway Commissioner and Sheriff make recommendations to the full County Board.  Very few requests made are ever denied.  To date there have been very few ATV accidents on county highways.

The Highway Committee is considering whether to recommend opening all county highways based on the fact that there have been no denials and few accidents.  Prior to taking any action the Highway Committee wants public input.

After the public hearing, the Committee will see a summary of comments at their September meeting prior to making any recommendations to the County Board.
